MOST IMPORTANT LEGUME IN WEST AFRICA

Cowpea, (Vigna unguiculata), is a legume mainly cultivated in Africa and India. This crop is an important source of economic livelihood as it is a staple food with good nutritional intake for both rural and urban actors. Sub Saharan African farmers produce it in intercropping systems usually letting it grow with other cereals such as maize, sorghum, millet and cassava. West Africa is a key production zone with Nigeria contributing to over 60% of the total production followed by other countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Ghana and Cameroon.
